  • Allowances? Whatever happened to those?

You see it in the movies, kids raking in the big money, storing it in the little pink piggy banks. It seemed that every kid all across the country was getting an allowance. Heck, even the children of star celebrities that had movies out were getting allowances! I never got an allowance. My parents thought food, clothing and shelter should be enough. Mind you, at the receiving end of these words was a small six-year-old boy who had no idea how to even add properly.

I never thought it was fair. Other kids got to run down to the store and buy themselves a sea of treats one can only dream of while I sat at home with a crummy piece of fruit. You know, it wasn’t always like this. I would receive an allowance until the rent and cost of living started increasing every month and so, my parents would have to reduce my allowance lower and lower each month. Eventually, I grew too old for allowances and had to go to work with my father in order to receive the money that I deserved. My father’s whole lesson behind it was “You have to work hard in life to get anywhere you are in life”.

Did you ever receive an allowance? Did it get cut-off? What did you do to get the money?
